ICT in Science Education

How is ICT used in schools for teaching science?

I really like the video clip shown above. It actually descibes pretty much on how is ICT used in schools for teaching science. Schools in Brunei Darussalam may not be as advanced or as well equipped but we have gone through a lot of changes. From black boards to white boards and now to interactive whiteboards and projectors. Science teachers are known for their innovativeness therefore chalk and talk is no more acceptable. Even the overhead projectors are considered out dated. Schools have been investing on projectors posted onto the ceiling, internet connection and also laptops for loan. There are also computer labs available with interactive whiteboards or portable projectors for use in classrooms. E-books, encyclopedias, virtual tours are available online. Students can access these for their projects, researches or even for everyday use. I wonder if books will become extinct someday.
Teachers may ask students to explore on a topic to be learned beforehand. Or they can explore in class and discuss with their friends what they have found. They can gather the informations and build their own understanding with the teacher's guide. This can build their enthusiasm in learning science, increase their self-esteem and research skills at the same time.

How can ICT be used for teaching science?

Internet is a very powerful tool especially for learning. Informations, images, videos, interactive games, translator and dictionaries are at your fingertips away. Internet can also connect people all over the world anytime anywhere. Therefore teaching science is made much easier, faster and more fun using ICT. Teachers are now able to find a lot of 'colourful' resources on the net to be integrated in their teachings. One example of ICT tech-rich lesson can be found in one of the pages in this blog. You can download the power point slides and use them in your lesson. Hence you can see that blogs provide a service for us to share informations. Together with learning management system (lms), and many other software, teachers can update students with as much information as possible. Students who were absent from class can make use of these so as not to be left behind in their lessons. Notes, homework, classwork, practical activities and many more can just be uploaded and viewed by the students at home or abroad. And they can also submit their work online. One of the links below will show you how one of the teachers uses Evernote in his teaching.
I have also found an intesesting video which shows how the angry bird game can be used to teach projectile in physics. What could be more interesting? Imagine how the students will react to this.

Learning through games which are always associated with fun should be one of the most effective ways in teaching science. Explore wonderville link below and you can see the difference. Children can play hours and hours with their playstations or computer games, why not play science games and acquire knowledge without the pressure.
For higher level learning, as in the universities, lecturers can only guide you but you need to foster your understanding on your own. I would usually resort to the internet first before burying myself in books. Its a world of knowledge with just a click of a key word, you can teach yourself quickly, easily and more interestingly provided that you can indentify the reliable sites.
